CallReply

Glossary of missed calls and text messages

Automatic reply, conditional forwarding, SMS segment: technical terms are not always clear. This glossary explains them simply, with their uses and their limits.

Missed call SMS

A missed call SMS is a text message sent to someone whose call did not get through, because you did not pick up or you declined it. It tells the caller their call was seen and what happens next: a call back, a link, another way to reach you.

Automatic SMS reply

An automatic SMS reply is a text message written in advance and sent without any manual action when a specific event happens, most often a missed call. It stands in for the reply you would have written yourself if you had had the time.

Call forwarding

Call forwarding is a mobile network service that transfers calls meant for your number to another number. It can be permanent or apply only in certain cases: no answer, phone unreachable or line busy.

Why this glossary?

Before you set up an automatic text after a missed call, it helps to know what the words actually mean. Call forwarding is not voicemail, an automatic reply is not an answering machine, and iPhone does not work like Android. Each entry gives the general principle, then explains what CallReply does where relevant. No jargon is assumed: each page can be read on its own.

How to use it

Each entry starts with a short definition, followed by more detailed sections: how it works, good practice, precautions. Links at the bottom point to the matching CallReply features. The codes and behaviours described are general: your carrier or phone may work slightly differently, so always check with them. If a term is missing, please let us know through support. We add entries over time.
